The Perry Residence
Straw Bale Residence – Perry, KS
This straw bale home was designed for a family that wished to create their own sense of home. They poured all of themselves into the design and construction of this beautifully crafted timber framed home.
The Perry Residence was my first timber-frame, straw-bale wrap home, designed in 2014. The project began with a foundation constructed from Rastra block. From there, a local timber framing company raised the timber structure, while volunteers, friends, and family came together to help stack the straw bales. It was truly a community effort, and the care, craftsmanship, and generosity that went into the home made the experience especially meaningful.
At the heart of the residence is an open kitchen and living area that creates a warm, inviting atmosphere. Exposed timber framing brings a natural character and timeless beauty to the interior, while abundant natural light enhances the sense of openness throughout the home. The quality of the finishes reflects the attention to detail invested in every stage of construction.
A centrally located masonry stove, paired with a thermal mass wall, provides comfortable warmth during the cooler months. In summer, the wraparound porch shades the building and helps maintain a cool, comfortable interior. Above the main living space, a loft overlooks the great room and serves as a craft studio and study, creating a flexible space for creativity, work, and reflection.
The Perry Residence remains a special project, not only as my first timber-frame straw-bale design, but also as an example of what can be accomplished when a community comes together to build a home with care and intention.
